Position Paper 2: Radio

 Radio Stations Around the Globe:

Around the world different countries are using radio as a main source of information and music. Having access to internet opens many doors to explore different parts of the world. By being able to access radio around the globe we can become more aware of things happening in other countries. I decided I wanted to focus on radio stations from all over. There are many different websites the give access to radio stations in places like Africa. Australia, Brazil, etc. For example, radio.garden has a 3D model of the earth where you can click on different locations to listen to different stations.

The first station I did a deep dive into is the West Africa Democracy Radio. It is based in Dakar, Senegal and was created by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa. Started up in 2003 they broadcast in French, Portuguese, and english. They are partnered with over 40 radio stations in 8 West African countries. In 2011 they began partnering and involving software like Soundcloud. They cover a range of news happening around the world and in Africa. One of their newest broadcasts covered 50 people that have been killed in Guinea in recent protests. These protest have done with multiple issues like the change in their constitution that has allowed their current President Alpha Condé to be able to run for a third term. This story already had over 1.60 million listeners before the day even ended. Which shows how many people are relying on radio as a valid news source. Getting access to these stories and more is as easy as going to their site wadr.org

The BBC is a major news source for Europe and for countries like the United States to have access to events in the UK etc. They have many different variations of their BBC radio and I decided to cover BBC Radio Wales. It began broadcasting way back in 1978 and broadcasts in English but has a sister stations that broadcasts in in Welsh language. They station is averaging around 316,000 listeners a week and has steadily increased throughout the past few years. They cover all ranges of topics from music, entertainment, and hard news. They broadcast every week day in the mornings for hards news and then split the rest of the day into different categories like sports from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. mixed with music. BBC Radio Wales was created after an opt-out from BBC Radio 4. Back in 2018 they heavily expanded to over 32 transmitters throughout North East and Mid Wales. Which expanded their reach to almost 91% of all home is Wales. They have feature segments like Science Cafe where they discuss new discoveries in the world of science. Their  most recent segment discussed "The Wonderful World of Water Bears"  Adam Walton finds all about Tardigrades which are known as water bear or moss piglets. Discussing what these creatures can tell us about how our environment is changing and could potentially lead to key discoveries in health. Listening live through any of the BBC radio stations is very easy simply going to their online sit and clicking on Wales can lead you to live listening. https://www.bbc.co.uk/schedules/p00fzl8y#on-now

Looking into how radio varies in different countries around the world has opening my eyes to a new way to attain news information. Sites like Radio Garden make it easier than ever to have access to radio from all around the globe. Learning about things like the killings that have been occurring in Guinea was something I wasn't even aware of.Stations like the ones I mentioned above is something I look forward to using in the future to gain access to news happening in other places. The world of radio will continue to evolve and having access at the click of a button helps spread news that may not be covered in your typical newscast.
